GROUND GAME LEADS PIONEERS OVER CHOCTAW

When Stillwater High needed offense in the fourth quarter to put the nail in Choctaw’s coffin, it turned to its ground attack. Freshman tailback Qwontrell Walker stepped up late for the Pioneers when the Yellowjackets were climbing back into Thursday’s contest. Walker put the Pioneers on his back, as the Stillwater ground game clinched the crucial district win. Walker broke a huge run two plays after Choctaw cut Stillwater’s lead to one possession. Four plays later, senior running back Tyler Disidore punched in the final score, giving Stillwater a 35-24 win. “This was a really big district game,” Disidore said. “Lawton was a big one, too, but we let that one slip. We don’t plan on letting another one slip away from us.” Disidore finished the game with 11 carries for 32 yards and three touchdowns. His counterpart, Walker, led Stillwater with 193 yards on 28 carries and pair of touchdowns. Walker’s 57-yard run two plays after Choctaw cut the lead to four points was arguably the biggest play of the night for Stillwater’s offense. He broke a 15-yard run three plays later, converting a third-down conversion. He left the game after the play, but Disidore scored on a 4-yard run the on the ensuing play. “Oh yeah, it felt good to run the ball again,” Disidore said. “I think it’s a really good combo. He gets all the yards and I’m the big body to punch it in. I think we have a really good set up here.” Disidore and the Pioneers were happy to bounce back Thursday after losing at Lawton last week. That loss ended their five-game winning streak to begin the season. “After losing to Lawton, that brought us back down to Earth,” Disidore said. “That was really good motivation for this week’s practices. We went really hard this week and I think it definitely paid off.” Stillwater coach Tucker Barnard agreed, saying Thursday’s win was important for the district standings and for his team’s confidence moving forward with four regular season game remaining. “We feel like if we win out, we could likely be in a three-way tie situation that could come down to points,” Barnard said. “We didn’t get our 15 here and we were 14 down last week. It could be a bit sketchy down the stretch. But we just need to go win next week and take it one game at a time.” One of the biggest moments in the game happened late in the first half. Senior Lane Grant intercepted Choctaw near midfield, weaved through the defense and returned it to the Choctaw 17-yard line. “He was big time,” Barnard said of Walker. “We thought we spotted something special in him and he keeps proving us right. I don’t know how many yards he had, but he had some big-time runs at big moments.” Sophomore quarterback Gunnar Gundy converted a third-down-and-long with a 12-yard pass to senior Garrett Leming. Two plays later, Disidore scored his second of three touchdowns on a 1-yard run. The interception and score with 31 seconds left in the half was a huge swing of momentum for Stillwater. “That was big,” Barnard said. “Lane came up huge right there and we were able to punch it in. Those were some big-time moments.” Barnard and his players were all smiles Thursday night after stopping Choctaw on a fourth down attempt for the third time of the game. The final one locked up the win. “We talked about a lot about how the response this week said a lot about us,” Barnard said. “We came out and had a great first half, but a little lull in the beginning of the second half. I’m really proud of them. That was a good football team we beat and I knew it was going to be a dogfight.” Stillwater will travel to Enid next for a another Thursday night contest. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
